A Kansas eighth grader who had already won his cross country race headed back onto the course to help another runner reach the finish line. Carter Stephenson found Bryson King, who has cerebral palsy, and ran alongside him for the final stretch while encouraging him to keep going.
Bryson says Carter’s support made him feel like he could finish the race, and he ended up setting a new personal record. His family was especially touched to see encouragement coming from a competitor rather than one of Bryson’s own teammates.
Both families say the moment was a reminder that competition and kindness can go hand in hand. Carter’s father says that while most young athletes won’t grow up to be professional sports stars, they can all grow up to be good people.
