After receiving a free one-of-a-kind gold rookie card featuring the viral raccoon Jimothy, a 13-year-old Seattle Mariners fan traded in the ballpark giveaway card for a $21,100 payday. The rare card was one of 20-thousand cards handed out during a Mariners promotion in August. Its recipient, Abby, decided to auction her card off on eBay, where bidding climbed from 99-cents to more than $21-thousand.
Jimothy became a Seattle celebrity this summer after videos of the unusually shaped raccoon roaming the city’s Ballard neighborhood attracted millions of views. The Mariners embraced the craze with special cards, merchandise and events, including a promotion benefiting a local food bank.
Abby’s card drew 100 bids before selling Sunday night. Several fan pages say the proceeds from the sale are expected to go toward her college fund.
