A man in Mentor, Ohio, rescued a mother and her young daughter after their SUV crashed into a pond earlier this month. Yianni Sarris, 33, was helping his father cut down trees when he saw a vehicle speed across several nearby yards before plunging into the water. He could hear eight-year-old Olivia Wallace screaming from inside the vehicle, so he immediately ran into the pond and helped her reach safety with assistance from a neighbor before returning to the sinking SUV to rescue Olivia’s mother, 46-year-old Kim Wallace, who was unconscious.
Kim later said she had started feeling extremely nauseous while driving home after picking up dinner and then lost consciousness behind the wheel. Sarris climbed into the SUV through the back seat after the water had risen above his chest, unbuckled Kim’s seatbelt and pulled her from the vehicle. He says the rescue lasted about three and a half minutes before he collapsed from exhaustion after reaching shore.
Last week, the Sarris and Wallace families reunited at a nearby park and thanked Sarris for his actions that night. Kim told him she was grateful he was there, while her husband Chris Wallace said their family was still together because of him. She’s continuing to recover and working with doctors to determine what caused her to lose consciousness while driving.
