On Monday, NBC News correspondent Tom Costello helped rescue a teenager from a burning car after witnessing a crash in Maryland. The journalist says the car passed him at what he estimated to be 100 miles per hour before striking a concrete barrier on the beltway and exploding “into a hundred pieces.”
After calling 911, Costello approached the wrecked vehicle and found the teenage driver alive inside. He says the driver appeared to be in shock and told him that “everything hurts” and that he couldn’t feel much in his fingers or toes. As flames began growing underneath the car, Costello sought help from bystanders, including an orthopedic surgeon and a nurse who had stopped nearby.
The surgeon supported the driver’s neck while Costello and the nurse carried him away from the vehicle to safety. Costello says the car caught fire and exploded shortly after they moved the teen. Reflecting on the experience, he says he’s thankful that the surgeon and nurse were there to help save the teen, adding, “I can't believe he's alive, to be honest with you.”
