A high school junior in La Crosse, Wisconsin, recently fulfilled a promise he made as a toddler by taking his grandmother to prom. Avant Williams says his grandma, Svala Heller, had always wanted to attend a prom after growing up in Iceland, where proms are uncommon. The teen says he had been planning for the moment since he was very young and wanted to make her dream come true.
Heller became interested in prom through American television and had reminded her grandson for years that she wanted him to take her one day. He says he was excited and honored to share the experience with her because of their close relationship. Before the dance, the pair posed for photos with Williams’ friends and prepared for the evening together.
Heller was also escorted to the dance by her grandson’s best friend, Ruben Smith, who says the experience felt special because few people get the chance to attend prom with a friend’s grandmother. She says she and her grandson share a strong bond and that she was enjoying every moment of the experience. Williams says taking his grandmother to prom meant the world to him because she’s supported him throughout his life.
