Missouri elementary school students wrote handwritten letters to high school students ahead of prom to encourage safe driving and responsible choices. The letters, created in Gretchen Friedrich’s fifth-grade English class at Creekmoor Elementary, were placed on car windshields before the event as part of a class assignment. Student Ivyn Meyer wrote a note urging teens not to drink and drive and to stay around responsible friends.
High school senior Brooke Stephenson discovered one of the letters on her car and called it “the most adorable thing I had ever read.” She later met Ivyn after learning he’d written the message, which reminded her to think about her decisions on prom night. Her mother, Shauna Stephenson, said the thoughtful gesture from younger students had a meaningful impact on their family.
Ivyn said writing the message made him feel “like a hero.” Many of the letters were shared by families and community members online. The initiative comes as data from the Centers for Disease Control shows car accidents are a leading cause of death for teens, with alcohol involved in many cases.
