Last week, Robert Schott of Cranford, New Jersey, built a 1953 Chevy-style Good Humor truck out of snow on his front lawn and is selling ice cream from it to benefit the Children’s Specialized Hospital Foundation in Mountainside. The truck, labeled “OHSOGOOD,” is 99% made of snow and features details like headlights, rims, and a front seat. Since its grand opening last Friday evening, he’s been selling ice cream bars for $5 each and has raised more than $5-thousand for the foundation.
Schott says the cause is personal to him. His friend Charlie Newman received care at Children’s Specialized Hospital, and Schott’s father, who’s nearing his 104th birthday, volunteered there in the 1960s and 1970s, doing science experiments and playing games with patients.
Neighbor Lisa Hunt helped organize the grand opening, which drew a line that wrapped around the corner. Some of the children currently receiving care at the hospital attended the event. Schott says seeing the kids’ delight and the dedication of their parents deeply moved him.
