A New Jersey runner recently completed seven marathons on seven continents in seven days to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Anthony Simonetti, a 32-year-old Staten Island native who now lives in Hazlet, joined 51 other runners in the World Marathon Challenge, starting in Cape Town, South Africa in January, traveling to Antarctica for the first race, and finishing February 5th in Miami.
Simonetti says the effort was inspired by watching his sister battle childhood cancer, and he’s long supported the hospital through endurance events. He previously represented St. Jude at the Boston Marathon and has since raced in Sydney, London, Berlin and Chicago, raising roughly $250-thousand over the years.
For this challenge, Simonetti has a goal of collecting $100-thousand and has raised nearly $72-thousand so far. He says the week involved constant flights between continents with little sleep, and next month he plans to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to continue his support for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
