An anonymous donor gave over $15-thousand to Winfield Unified School District 465 in Kansas, eliminating all outstanding student lunch debt. The announcement was made by Superintendent Tricia Reiser during a Board of Education meeting last week. The donation wiped all negative meal balances for students across the district.
The gift directly affected about 450 students who had accumulated unpaid lunch charges. Some of the debt had built up before certain students qualified for free or reduced-price meals. This year, over 11-hundred students in the district are eligible for meal assistance based on family income.
District officials say families will now begin the spring semester with clean meal account balances. Business Manager and Board Treasurer Elizabeth Smith calls the donation a blessing and says every student will continue to have access to meals at school. The district also encourages eligible families to apply for free or reduced-price meal programs.
