Patricia “Patty” Warden of Ottawa, Canada, who won a $70-million lotto jackpot in 2024, recently spent more than $20-thousand on grocery gift cards for strangers at a local store. She quietly handed out hundreds of gift cards to shoppers who were surprised to have part of their groceries paid for. She says that rising food costs are making it difficult for many families and she wanted to help.
According to Warden, the biggest change since winning the lottery isn’t what she can buy, but how many people she can support. Helping others has always been her goal and she’s still the same person despite her wealth. “I get to help a lot more people,” she says, adding that the experience has been life-changing.
Before winning the lottery, she faced years of illness, addiction, homelessness, and personal hardship. She credits her mother for helping her rebuild her life with integrity, caring, and respect for others. Now sober for 30 years, Warden says giving back brings her joy and that she simply wants to share her happiness.
