Students at a California high school have transformed a classroom into a boutique-style store providing free clothing, shoes, and school supplies to students in need. Golden Eagle Outfitters at Clovis West High School in Fresno was the brainchild of English teacher Erin Garcia, who was inspired after helping a student find dress shoes for graduation last spring.
The initiative has quickly grown, with about 40 students from several school clubs and programs contributing to the effort. Students decorated the store and its entrance with uplifting slogans like “clothing with confidence,” to make the space feel welcoming and empowering. Families in need can schedule appointments for a private shopping experience.
Last week, the store served its first customer, a student who’d recently lost everything in a house fire. Students involved in the project are proud of what they’ve accomplished so far and hope to expand the store’s offerings in the future with seasonal items like prom attire. They believe the project can continue to grow to serve even more students.
