Last week, British author Vicky Ball attended an authors’ event where she got to speak to some readers, but only sold two copies of her newest book. She shared her gratitude on social media, tweeting, “Sold 2 books. I’ve done some events where I haven’t sold any.” The post went viral with over 24-million views and more than 700-thousand likes, prompting readers all over the world to buy her books and propelling her to the top of Amazon’s bestseller charts.
After seeing her book “Abandoned” reach the number one spot on the American charts, Ball says she felt like she was in a "weird crazy dream." Readers from every corner of the globe responded to her to share that they’d bought her work. Her previous book, “Powerless” also got a bump in sales following the viral post.
A lecturer at the University of Essex and a creative writing master's student, Ball wrote her first novel during the pandemic, mainly on weekends, and published it in 2021. When asked if she has any advice for aspiring writers, she encourages simply starting, saying, "Just write! It’s like a journey, and I really enjoy the process. You never know where it’s going to go."
