DDG: TX Girl Saves Sister’s Life Hours After Learning How In A Class

Earlier this month, McKinney, Texas, 12-year-old Auri Agramont acted quickly to save her eight-year-old sister Suri’s life when she began choking on a piece of candy. The incident occurred as the sisters were getting ready to take their dogs on a walk. "She leaned back [to] take a deep breath... but no air was coming out," Auri says, recounting the emergency situation.

Fortunately, the big sis had learned the Heimlich maneuver just hours earlier in a babysitting training class sponsored by the McKinney Fire Department and Baylor Scott & White nurses. She took the class on her aunt’s recommendation to add more value to her babysitting services. Using her newly acquired skills, Auri successfully dislodged the candy, likely saving her sister’s life.

This week, she was honored by McKinney’s mayor and city council with an award recognizing her quick thinking and courage. Her mom, Paula Branez, expressed pride in Auri for keeping her cool under intense pressure, saying, "Not everybody has that ability to just stay calm and react." McKinney Fire Chief Paul Dow praised Auri for learning the life-saving skills, which he recommends as a good idea for anyone.
