DDG: Social Media Reunites Couple With Lost Wedding Video After 57 Years

An Australian couple who lost their wedding video 57 years ago finally got it back, thanks to social media. Aileen and Bill Turnbill were married in Scotland in 1967 and soon afterwards, they borrowed a projector to watch the footage filmed of them leaving the church on their wedding day. That was the only time they saw it because they accidentally left the film in the projector, but a Facebook post changed all that.

Aileen was scrolling on the site one day when she spotted a still shot taken from her wedding video. The photo was posted in a group for Australian natives by Terry Cheyne, whose uncle had loaned the couple his projector over five decades before. He’d come across it at his uncle’s house and watched it many times, but didn’t recognize anyone in the footage.

The Turnbills reached out to Cheyne, who sent them their wedding day film and they say watching it has been “surreal.” “It just seems strange for me to see my mother and my father, not just in a photograph but they’re actually moving and walking,” Aileen says. “And my husband, he saw his grandmother and his grandfather, who was 100 when he died. To look back and see these people was just absolutely amazing, I still can’t believe it really.”
