Airbnb’s nonprofit entity Airbnb.org is offering free housing to those affected by Hurricane Helene. The Category 4 storm severely impacted communities from North Florida to Virginia and displaced thousands of people. Working with local nonprofits and community services, Airbnb.org is identifying those in greatest need of temporary housing and leveraging Airbnb's platform to provide free shelter, with the help of hosts who offer their homes for free or at a discount.
Residents who’ve been displaced by the storm can apply for housing through local resources by calling 211 for assistance. Airbnb.org has already placed several hundred people in temporary housing and the organization expects to assist many more as recovery efforts continue. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper praised the nonprofit’s efforts to provide safe housing and collaborate with local organizations to support the displaced.
Airbnb.org’s executive director Christoph Gorder says they’re dedicated to helping vulnerable families find housing near schools or familiar areas. Hosts can choose to waive fees or offer reduced-cost stays, but Airbnb.org also covers the cost of regular listings. One host, Danielle from Tampa, shares that she’s proud to be part of the relief effort and the community of Airbnb hosts assisting those in need.
