DDG: Neighborhood Gives Mailman Sweet Send-Off After 31 Years On The Job

Some folks can’t wait to retire because they don’t want to do their job anymore, but that wasn’t the case for Bill Buda. He’s been a mail carrier for 31 years and served the same neighborhood for more than 24 of them. He’s gotten to know everyone on his route and when he decided to retire from the USPS, the neighborhood went all out to show their appreciation for his service.

Bill was asked multiple times when his last day would be, so he created a “save the date” card and taped it to his customers’ doors. He also chose to make it a Saturday so he could say goodbye to more of them. His family walked the 12.2-miles of his route with him and his daughter, Alexa, created a video documenting the send-off the neighborhood gave her dad.

The clip, which has more than half a million views, shows Bill delivering mail to different houses and being met with sweet notes, drawings, balloons, yard signs and displays, and lots of hugs. He was blown away by the heartwarming show of support. “Man, I guess for 24 and a half years on this route, I really must have done something right to have this,” he says of the neighborhood farewell. “So it was fantastic.”
