At the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival in New Hampshire, Governor Chris Sununu helped save Christian Moreno, a contestant who began choking during a lobster roll eating contest. Moreno had signaled for help after eating two lobster rolls, and Sununu quickly responded by performing the Heimlich maneuver. After several thrusts, first responders took over and were able to dislodge the obstruction.
The contest featured six participants, who were given 10 minutes to eat as many lobster rolls as possible. Moreno, who had studied competitive eater Joey Chestnut in preparation for the event, was aiming to eat at least 20 lobster rolls. Despite the scare, he was able to continue in the competition after he recovered, eating a total of nine lobster rolls, though it wasn’t enough to win the contest.
Governor Sununu described the event as chaotic but was glad he was able to help. Because Moreno wasn’t wearing his eyeglasses at the time of the incident, he initially didn’t know it was the governor who’d helped him. He later joked with a fellow contestant about the unusual experience of having received the Heimlich from the governor.
