At six months old, Helin Dinler was diagnosed with a rare and life-threatening liver disease and her mother, Anna Shushura, was told she would need a new liver. The 36-year-old Scottish mom of two was heartbroken and determined to help her baby survive, but neither she, nor Helin’s dad Ozkan, or her nine-year-old sister Veronika ended up being a match. So, Anna made a desperate plea on social media for help.
The post caught the attention of Letty Fenlon, a 27-year-old professional horse jumper from Yorkshire, who immediately contacted the liver donation team to see if she could help. After undergoing numerous tests, Letty was confirmed as a match and, despite the risk involved, decided to go through with the surgery. Earlier this year, she underwent a six-hour live-donor operation in Leeds, donating a section of her liver to the baby girl.
The transplant was successful, and Helin received her new liver the following day without any complications. Anna expressed her deep gratitude toward Letty for her lifesaving act of kindness, saying that their family will be forever thankful. Now a few months post-transplant, the nine-month-old is healthy and thriving thanks to Letty’s selflessness and bravery.
