In May of 2023, former Yale swimmer Ali Truwit was attacked by a shark while snorkeling in Turks and Caicos. She was airlifted to the U.S. for emergency medical treatment and her leg had to be amputated below the knee. Despite this traumatic event, she quickly returned to the water, confronting her fears and starting her journey to recovery.
Determined not to let the attack define her, Truwit focused on regaining her strength and overcoming her physical and mental challenges through intense rehab, prosthetic training, and therapy. Her dedication paid off when she qualified for the 2024 Paris Paralympics to compete in the 100 free, 400 free, and 100 backstroke events.
At the U.S. Paralympic trials, Truwit secured her place on the national team, joining accomplished athletes like Jessica Long. She also launched the "Stronger Than You Think" foundation to help others in similar situations. Now, with the support of her family and friends, Truwit is grateful to be back in the water and looking forward to competing in Paris.
