This Father’s Day, one San Diego dad received a gift from his daughter that it’s going to be nearly impossible to top. When 78-year-old Bob Platt was placed on dialysis due to his failing kidneys, his daughter Erika stepped up to donate hers. At first he tried to stop his daughter from making the donation, but she was determined to help the man she calls her “first love” and “superhero.”
The father and daughter recently underwent successful transplant surgery at UC San Diego Health. Shortly after the surgery, when they got to see each other for the first time, Erika teased her dad, telling him that doctors had accidentally switched their brains instead of their kidneys. “Sorry about your luck,” she joked. They’re both now recovering well.
Bob expressed deep gratitude for his daughter’s gift, saying that "every day is Father's Day now" for him. But Erika says that her gift wasn’t just about helping her dad to get better, it was also to make it so her kids could have their grandfather back in their lives. With more than 100-thousand people currently waiting on a kidney donor in the U.S., it’s unlikely Bob would have gotten a new kidney anytime soon, but it turns out, being a great dad can save your life.
