Daily Do Good: Uber Eats Driver Helps Detroit Family Escape Burning Home

Retired Ford employee turned Uber Eats driver Joe Ferullo is being praised for recently rescuing a family from a burning building in Southwest Detroit. While out making deliveries, Ferullo saw a woman dangling a four-year-old boy from a window of a burning home. He stopped his car and rushed to help.

Standing under the window, Ferullo made eye contact with the woman, subtly letting her know that she could trust him. She dropped her child and he safely caught him, then turned his attention back to the window. The woman then hung her nine-year-old son out of the window by his feet for Ferullo to catch. He urged her to drop him feet first, but the woman didn’t speak English and couldn’t understand. Desperate to escape, she held the child and jumped from the window. Fefullo tried to catch them both, but they all three ended up on the ground, safe and mostly unharmed.

The mother, her two sons, and another woman from the home had to be treated for smoke inhalation, and a responding firefighter was also injured, but everyone is expected to recover. And while Ferullo injured his knee in the ordeal, he’s glad he happened to see the woman holding her child out the window, happy to have been able to help, and relieved that everyone made it out alive.
