DDG: Doctor Cancer-Free 1 Year After Using His Own Experimental Treatment

Australian Professor Richard Scolyer, recognized as a 2024 Australians of the Year for his groundbreaking work on melanoma, has used his own research to successfully treat his incurable brain cancer. Diagnosed with glioblastoma almost a year ago, he recently shared on social media that an MRI showed he was cancer free. He thanked his medical team, family, and wife Katie for their support.

Scolyer, who had a seizure in Poland leading to the discovery of his tumor last year, is the first brain cancer patient to undergo pre-surgery combination immunotherapy. His decision to undertake this experimental treatment has advanced the understanding of brain cancer and will benefit future patients.

Along with his Australian of the Year co-winner Professor Georgina Long, Scolyer has made melanoma a curable disease through their innovative approach to treatment, which involves activating the patient’s immune system and is showing promise in treating other types of cancer. He’s optimistic about his progress and says that so far he’s not had any major adverse reactions to the treatment.
