With his birthday coming up, Mike Drummond of Girard, Ohio, turned to social media to ask his friends for suggestions for an act of kindness he could perform to celebrate. One friend suggested paying off school lunch debts, and Drummond agreed that would be a good idea. He reached out to the Girard City School District and discovered that their outstanding lunch debts came to over six hundred dollars.
Within just two days, Drummond had received more than $2-thousand in donations from his social media post to help pay down school lunch debt. He plans to continue collecting donations until February 20th, with all funds going to the local school district’s Angel Fund, which is used to settle unpaid lunch debts. The fund, which has been empty due to increased demand after the end of Covid-era lunch assistance, ensures no student is turned away hungry.
Girard's superintendent, Bryan O'Hara, says he appreciates the community support, noting that the school never denies food to students regardless of their lunch account balance. He’s grateful for Drummond’s generous act of kindness, calling it a “reflection” of the community’s giving spirit. "We're Girard, we're family,” O’Hara says, paraphrasing the school district’s motto, “We take care of each other."
