DDG: Ancestry.com Leads Vietnam Vet To Connect With Son He Never Met

A heartwarming reunion recently unfolded in Milton, Florida, when Jim Langdon, a Vietnam veteran in his 70s, met his long-lost son for the first time. Langdon had always known he had a son in Thailand who was born shortly after he was forced to leave the country at the end of his deployment. His son, John Hermann, moved to the U.S. with his mother and step-father when he was four-years-old and has been searching for his father ever since.

The father-son reunion was finally made possible when Langdon's niece matched with Hermann through an Ancestry.com DNA test. Hermann flew into the Pensacola Airport from San Diego and they got to spend some quality time together including a pizza night with Langdon's wife, Cathy. He was shocked to learn his son had been in the U.S. all this time. "After so many years, I just thought that there was no way to find my son,” he says, “Let alone find out he’s here in the states and that his mother is still alive."

Langdon wasn’t only surprised to learn that his son’s mother, Get, is still alive, but also that she’s been living in the U.S. since the 70s. Before his deployment was suddenly cut short, they’d planned to get married, but the chaos of the Vietnam War and bureaucratic delays put an end to those hopes. Now the father and son have filled in the missing parts of their family tree and Hermann hopes that their story will inspire others to find their long-lost relatives.
