Daily Do Good: Dog Helps Authorities Rescue Owner From Frozen Lake

Last week, a 65-year-old Michigan man found himself in a dangerous situation when he fell through the ice on Arbutus Lake near Traverse City, Michigan. Fortunately, thanks to the quick response of Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Officer Kammeron Bennetts and the heroic actions of the man's loyal dog, Ruby, the incident had a happy ending.

When bystanders on the shore called 911 after witnessing the man fall into the icy water, Officer Bennetts arrived on the scene and took immediate action. Not wanting to suffer the same fate as the man, the officer kept a safe distance and tried to throw him a rescue disc attached to a rope to pull him from the ice, but the man was too far out on the lake. So Officer Bennetts called Ruby over to him and attached the disc to her collar. The man then called Ruby back to him.

Ruby returned across the thin ice bringing her owner the lifeline. Then Bennetts was able to pull the man out of the water, onto the ice, and close enough for Bennetts and a firefighter from Grand Traverse Metro Fire to pull the man to safety. Although the man was in the frigid water for more than 15 minutes, he was treated at a nearby hospital and later released.
