Daily Do Good: Iowa Doctor Braves Snow On A 4-Wheeler To Deliver Baby

Last Friday, in Shenandoah, Iowa, a severe snowstorm had most residents of the small town sheltering indoors. But Krystal Gardner was at the Shenandoah Medical Center and her baby wasn’t going to wait out the storm, so her medical team, led by Dr Chase Brown would need to brave the elements to get to the hospital.

Despite the extreme weather, with snow "flying in all directions," Brown took to his trusty ATV and blasting through snow drifts at 20 miles an hour, he made it to the hospital in time to deliver Gardner’s baby girl, Birkley. For Gardner, there was never any question that Dr Brown and his staff would be there for the delivery. "We knew he was going to get there,” she says, “They all would get there for it.”

Dr Brown says that being a small town doctor is a dream come true for him and he takes the responsibility very seriously, because he knows people are depending on him. This was actually the third time he’d had to use his ATV to make it to a delivery. On Tuesday, when Brown gave baby Birkley a check up, he was happy to report that she was in good health. Her mom says that despite being born during a snowstorm, she doesn’t like the cold, and prefers to be tightly wrapped up in her warm blanket. Us too, Birkley. Us too!
