Iraq War veteran Jacob McWhorter narrowly escaped a fire that completely destroyed his Madisonville, Texas, home thanks to his service dog, Mattie Mae. He was asleep when the fire broke out, and initially didn't realize the danger due to the usual smell of smoke from their wood-burning stove. Mattie Mae alerted him by barking and physically pulling him out of bed, saving his life.
Although McWhorter lost his home, newly purchased appliances, and generations' worth of family memories in the fire, he’s grateful to be alive. He’s also thankful for the support he’s receiving from his community. Various local businesses and individuals are contributing to his needs, providing housing, cleanup, and organizing a fundraiser for him.
McWhorter expressed his appreciation for the overwhelming outpouring of assistance, and says that his phone has been ringing nonstop with offers of help. In a post to social media, the Madison County, Texas Veterans Services asked for donations to help McWhorter until an RV that’s been promised by a generous donor is ready for him next week.
