People lie all the time and a new study from the Netherlands reveals why they do it. It turns out, people tend to lie to make themselves feel better or to avoid rejection, not to protect other people’s feelings. Researchers ran a series of four experiments on participants, including one that had them keep track of any lying they did one day. Nearly a quarter (22%) told a self-centered lie, 8% lied to protect someone else, while 69% claimed they didn’t lie that day.
