The PA Caring Hearts animal shelter in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania, faced a setback when 500 pounds of Freshpet dog food, valued at around $14-hundred, was stolen from their senior animal facility. CEO Liz Jones explains that this particular food was vital for their senior dogs because it’s nutritious and more easily digested. The theft left the shelter with a significant shortage of supplies for the winter.
The incident highlighted the challenges faced by rescue pets, especially senior dogs, during the holiday season. A 2015 study shows that while 95% of puppies find homes, only 68% of senior dogs do. The theft only added to the difficulties the shelter faces providing care and support for senior dogs in permanent foster homes.
However, the story took a positive turn as the community and businesses responded generously to the shelter's plight. PetSmart and other food distributors, along with individuals from across the country, donated pet food and money. The overwhelming support led Jones to describe the response as a "Christmas miracle," and helped restore her faith in the spirit of giving and kindness during the holiday season.
