Philadelphia 76ers point guard Tyrese Maxey, through The Tyrese Maxey Foundation, gave away around 1,000 free Thanksgiving meals to families in North Philly. The event, featuring food, music, and prizes, was made possible by a collaboration between Maxey and several civic organizations and businesses. The athlete expressed how happy the giveaway made him and attributed the inspiration for his charitable work to his grandmother, who encouraged him to give back if he ever could.
It was the second year for the event and it has grown significantly after serving 300 families last year. Philadelphia Police Captain Michael Goodman praised the positive impact of Maxey's actions, calling him an inspiration for local youth.
Volunteer Crystal Coleman, president of the Guardian Civic League, shared how meaningful it was for her to be able to take part in giving back to the community and how the event provided so much joy and connection. For recipients like Genevieve Devlin, the event was about more than just a meal; it was a heartwarming start to the holiday season.
