After nearly five decades, Skyla Carmona, an Army wife from Nashville, has finally been reunited with her wedding ring that she lost at Fort Devens Army base in Massachusetts in 1975. Skyla and her husband Phil Carmona, who have been married for almost 50 years, lost the ring during a disagreement early in their marriage. Despite having searched for the ring several times over the years, it remained lost until now.
Recently, Skyla reached out to a Facebook group called Metal Detecting Massachusetts, and a man named Ben, along with a team of volunteers, offered to search for the ring. Using a map drawn by Phil, they located the ring buried about 30 yards from the tree line, under four inches of dirt and brush. The ring matched the patterns from Phil's sketch, and Skyla was overjoyed by the discovery.
The Carmonas made the trip to Massachusetts to recover the ring, but Skyla didn’t put the ring back on yet. On February 2nd of next year, the Carmonas plan to celebrate their 50th anniversary along with their eight children, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. It’s then that the ring will go back on Skyla's finger, just like it did the very first time in York, South Carolina, half a century ago.
