Daily Do Good: Community Replaces Autistic Teen’s Stolen Custom Bicycle

When someone stole an autistic teen’s bicycle, the community of Spokane, Washington, rallied to replace it. For 16-year-old Gabe, his bicycle wasn’t just a mode of transportation, it gave him a sense of freedom and an escape from a hectic world. "That bike was everything to him," his mother Brenda says, "He rode it all the time. He told me once, it was the only time his brain was quiet. That really hit me."

So when his beloved bike was stolen, Gabe’s community tried to help find it. And when it was clear that they weren’t going to be able to recover his bike, a pair of local businesses collaborated to replace it. The board of Cherry Hill BMX race track worked with Two-Wheeler Dealer bike shop to get Gabe a brand new replacement bike and customized it with many of the features from his stolen bike.

Eric Emerson, president of Cherry Hill BMX, believes replacing Gabe’s bike was well worth it, saying, "This small act of kindness brings a smile to a kiddo's face, and that's all that we need." Last week, they presented Gabe with his new bike and his family was blown away by the kind gift. "We're so grateful for everyone involved," says Brenda, “I cannot tell you what this means.”
