Last week, retired Army Specialist Eric Sabath was handed the keys to his new South Richmond, Virginia, home, with no mortgage to worry about for as long as he resides there. The mortgage-free home was made possible by a collaboration between Wells Fargo and Military Warriors Support Foundation. It was gifted to him as part of the foundation’s Homes4WoundedHeroes program, which awards mortgage-free homes to veterans who have been wounded in combat.
Sabath joined the Army in 2010 and was deployed in Afghanistan, where he was injured by an improvised explosive device. After multiple surgeries, he was medically retired in 2013. In the course of his career, the vet earned the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and of course, the Purple Heart.
During the key ceremony where Sabath was given his new home, Richmond City Council President Michael Jones commended him for his dedication to his country. “Thank you literally for your blood, sweat and tears,” Jones said, “What better way to recognize the sacrifice that all of our veterans put forth for this great country than what this program is doing today.” Now in their new home, Sabath and his wife Tear Weeks are planning for their future and thankful they don’t have to worry about paying for their home.
