Last month, the Las Vegas community rallied around David Courneya, a disabled veteran, and his dog, Skunk, when the pup was stolen. Skunk was later found in a Southern California animal shelter and returned to Courneya thanks to a microchip and the nonprofit Street Dogz. But the community wasn’t done helping the homeless vet and his dog.
David and Skunk had been living in his 1991 Ford pickup, which broke down, leaving them stranded. But with assistance from a social services organization and America's Garage in Henderson, his truck was repaired, and he was given temporary housing and support services. Brice Kay and Mario Conant of America's Garage donated their labor to overhaul the veteran's truck, and Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler and his wife paid for the parts.
Many others donated money, food, and friendship after hearing David's story through Street Dogz. Now he and Skunk are ready to hit the road again and hope to be able to get back to their home in Washington state. And David has this to say to all the folks who’ve helped him and Skunk so far, "I, without a shadow of a doubt, will be paying it forward."
