Study It’s Not Really Comfort Food! Favorite Eats Linked to Depression

A new study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that rates of depression are 80% higher in people whose diets include large amounts of ultra-processed foods. Most types of chocolate, chips, ice cream, cake, premade meals and sodas sold at US grocery stores meet those criteria. Over the duration of the study, 246 cases of depression were discovered. Those with depression included 66 men (27% of the cases) and 180 women (73% of the cases). Results were broken down into four groups in order to differentiate diets between the volunteers. Those that had ultra-processed foods making up at least 31% of their diets daily — the worst of the diets — were up to 82% more likely to be diagnosed with depression over the course of the study, compared to people who ate the least amount of ultra-processed foods, at less than 16% of their daily diets.
