The athletic director at a Georgia high school is surprised by a visit from the man who is volunteering to donate a life-saving kidney to him. McIntosh High School athletic director Leon Hammond was called to the library at the school in Peachtree City for what he thought was a meeting where he was to be recognized for receiving an athletic award. But when he arrived there, what he got was even more special.
Waiting at the library to meet Hammond was Alan Reeves. Before he became a U.S. Secret Service agent, Reeves was a police resource officer at the school. He says his wife read about Hammond’s search for a new kidney, so he decided to see if he was a match, and he was. The two men had never met before the touching moment when Hammond found out Reeves was going to give him his kidney.
At the emotional meeting, Reeves hands Hammond a letter telling him that he is a donor match and then gives him a t-shirt that reads “Kidney Buddies For Life.” Hammond and many of his coworkers broke down in tears at the news. Reeves says he’s giving Hammond his kidney because he’s already been blessed in his life and he wants the gesture to be a lesson to his kids. “I hope my children will see that this life is more than just about yourself,” he says. “It’s about helping other people.”
