Family Returns Rhys Hoskins’ Game 5 Home Run Ball

A New Jersey family is rewarded for returning Rhys Hoskins’ Game 5 home run ball. During Game 5 of the MLB playoffs between the Phillies and the Padres, Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins scored the first run of the game when he hit a homer in the bottom of the third inning. The home run ball headed right toward Phillies fan Kevin Hartwell, who was watching the game with his ten-year-old daughter, Lia, and nine-year-old son Kevin.

Even though the ball was special — afterall the home run helped the Phillies make it to the World Series for the first time in more than a decade — the Hartwells decided they wanted to give it back to Hoskins. They met up with him on Tuesday to return the ball and he had some surprise gifts for the family. "We got a signed bat, two signed balls … And we got pictures with him,” says Lia. “It's probably the most amazing day of my life!"

The family says that Hoskins thanked them for returning the ball and said their generosity deserved recognition. But the Hartwells think they got the better end of the deal and have some memories they’ll carry for the rest of their lives. And they also believe that giving Hoskins the ball was the right thing to do. "It just feels good,” says Kevin. “He deserved that ball."
