Daily Do Good: Girl Uses Book She Wrote To Help End Hunger

A Maryland fifth-grader is using her skills to help raise money to fight childhood hunger. Julia Barnes may only be ten-years-old, but she’s already making a difference in her community and across the country. In 2020, Julia wrote a book to raise money for The Water Project to help build wells in Africa and now she’s written another book to help fund her latest cause: making sure kids don’t go hungry.

Julia’s latest book, “The Best Chef,” is about a girl her age who goes to her BFF’s house for a birthday sleepover and ends up needing to help cook for the guests. Like her previous book, the proceeds from the book will go to charity. This time, Julia has chosen to support No Kid Hungry, an organization committed to ending childhood hunger in the U.S.

Kids not being able to afford food is something that Julia has seen first hand. "Last year, kids at my school had free meals from the school which was awesome,” she explains. “But now they are reduced priced meals, and there are a couple of people who have problems with food, so I want to help those people." Her goal is to raise $1-thousand for the cause, which No Kid Hungry will use to provide 10-thousand meals. In addition to the direct help Julia gives to her charitable causes, she hopes that she will also inspire other kids to do what they can to make the world a better place.
