Daily Do Good: Drone Pilot Helps Save Teen From Drowning At Beach

A drone pilot helps save a teen from drowning at a beach in Spain. A 14-year-old boy swimming off the coast of Valencia in eastern Spain was caught in the tide and was struggling to stay afloat. A lifeguard team was dispatched to rescue the teen, but before they could get out to his location, a drone delivered a life vest right to him by air.

The drone was operated by General Drones, a company that supplies rescue and emergency service drones for situations just like this one. Drone pilot Miguel Angel Pedrero says the teen was in bad shape and out of energy before the drone arrived. "It was a complicated maneuver, but we finally managed to give him the vest and he could float until the lifeguards reached him by jet ski," he explains. The teen was taken to a local hospital and was able to go home the following day.

More than 30 of these “Lifeguard Drones” are currently working with lifeguard crews at 22 beaches in Spain. General Drones CEO Adrián Plazas says their drones work with local lifeguard teams to help prevent tragedies by providing an extra set of eyes and they lower response times among other benefits.
