A grandmother in Maryland is being credited with saving the life of a pizza delivery driver after he suffers multiple gunshots. Papa John’s delivery driver Da’Shawn Betterson got in an argument in the parking lot of a Maryland Papa John’s Pizza and when he drove off to make a delivery, the other man followed him and shot him several times.
Karen Rollins had ordered pizzas for her grandchildren from Papa John’s and went out to meet the delivery person at their car. She could see that Betterson was in distress and asked him if he was okay. “And he said, ‘Ma’am, can you help me? I’ve just been shot.’” she recalls. So she called 911 and the operator talked her through how to apply a tourniquet and told her to keep the victim alert until first responders arrived. Betterson was transported via helicopter to a local trauma center and was later reported to be in stable condition.
Rollins says that Betterson’s mother stopped by her house to thank her for helping her son and Rollins told her not to cry, but it was emotional for both women. “As a mother, I know I would want someone to do the same thing for me.” Rollins says.
- A suspect was arrested in the shooting and has been charged with attempted first-and second-degree murder.
