Mariah Carey is being sued over her huge Christmas hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Another artist claims his song - which shares the same name - actually inspired her song.
The lawsuit is being brought by Andy Stone, who alleges he co-wrote and recorded a song with the same title five years earlier. He claims he recorded his version of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” back in 1989 and that it got “extensive airplay” and even landed on the Billboard charts during the 1993 Christmas season. And then Mariah released her tune in 1994 and it went on to become a holiday classic.
The thing is, the two songs have different lyrics and different melodies, so the similarities end at the name. Mariah’s version continues to bring in millions for her every year and it seems Andy wants a piece of that. The lawsuit claims her camp “never sought or obtained permission” to use the title and is seeking at least $20-million in damages for copyright infringement.
