DDG: Community Steps In To Help 96-Year-Old Vet With Home Repairs

A 96-year-old WWII veteran gets help from his community for much-needed home repairs. Carl Garrison built his home in Shoreline, Washington almost 40 years ago. But over the years, the veteran’s health has declined and he hasn’t been able to maintain the house and yard.

Recently, code violations from the city north of Seattle had begun to stack up along with fines. “The city wanted to fine us,” Carl’s son Richard Garrison says. “Ongoing fines and problems that had to be solved here.” That’s when Jason Kirk - the manager of a Seattle Home Depot and a fellow veteran - stepped in to help.

Under his direction, with help from the Home Depot foundation, Westcare Washington, and dozens of volunteers, all the necessary repairs and cleanup needed to bring Carl’s home up to code were completed this past weekend. Workers cleaned up the yard, put in new plants and mulch, and even built a ramp so Carl could more easily make it inside his second story home with his walker. A grateful Carl was just just amazed at what his community was willing to do to help him out. “I can’t believe it’s happening to me,” he says.
