DDG: Cancer Survivor Shatters Sports Record With 21 Varsity Letters

A North Carolina high school senior who battled leukemia as a child breaks school record by earning 21 varsity sports letters. When Haidyn Reinhardt graduates from Thales Academy in Apex, North Carolina, next month, she will have an amazing list of accomplishments to be proud of: she’ll be graduating with a 4.05 GPA, she has earned 21 varsity sports letters, and she beat leukemia.

Reinhardt didn’t really consider herself an athlete, but last year she realized that she was racking up an impressive number of varsity letters. She plays volleyball, basketball, and soccer. She’s also a cheerleader and has been named Thales Academy’s Female Athlete of the Year two years in a row.

McGeath Freeman, Reinhardt’s soccer coach, says that her 21 varsity letters are an amazing achievement, but he’s more impressed that the record was less important to her than her enjoyment of the sports. "She was just out here to play and enjoy being a varsity player, being a high schooler, and build the relationships," Freeman says. “That's really more impressive."
