Daily Do Good: Doc Restarts Woman’s Heart Mid-Flight

In the middle of a cross-country flight, husband and wife doctors perform CPR on a woman, saving her life. Brittany Mateiro was flying from Newark to Phoenix to attend a bachelorette party in early March. About two hours into the flight, the 28-year-old, who considers herself to be in good health, decided to take a nap.

On the same flight, cardiac physician Dr Kashif Chaudhry and his wife, internal medicine physician Dr Naila Shereen were headed to a cardiology conference.in Arizona. An announcement from a flight attendant came on the plane’s intercom and asked if there were any doctors or nurses on board. The couple rushed to the back of the plane and found Mateiro unresponsive, slumped over her seat and having seizure-like activity.

Chaudhry started CPR on Mateiro, while another cardiologist who was also on the flight got the plane’s automated external defibrillator (AED). They connected the AED, but the machine advised against shocking Mateiro — probably because the CPR had resuscitated her. Mateiro only remembers falling asleep and waking with Dr Shereen holding her hand. The plane was diverted to the nearest airport, Oklahoma City, where Mateiro was taken to the hospital and released a few hours later, seemingly in good health.

  • Although Mateiro was fortunate to have multiple doctors come to her aid, Chaudhry stresses that anyone with CPR training could have done what he did.
