Scott Charmoli has been convicted of five counts of healthcare fraud and two counts of making a false statement, facing a maximum of 60 years in prison. The dentist billed more than $4.2 million for crowns between 2016 and 2019, placing 95% more crowns than the average Wisconsin dentist. Rotten teeth in the area? No; he was convicted of purposely drilling holes in patients’ teeth so he could add a crown…and then bill them. He’s not done in court yet, either; nearly 100 of his patients are suing him for malpractice. How did they catch him? He sold his dental practice to another doctor, who looked through the records and then turned Charmoli in to the authorities.
