Daily Do Good: Alaska Man Rescued From Floating Ice Chunk

An Alaska man clinging to a floating chunk of ice was rescued off the coast of Anchor Point near Homer over the weekend. On Saturday morning, Alaska Wildlife Trooper Jeremy Baum saw a man about 300 yards offshore. Homer resident Jamie Snedden, 45, was half-submerged in the icy water, clinging to a large piece of ice.

The US Coast Guard was notified. They didn’t know how long it would take for them to get to Snedden, but a local fishing vessel, the F/V Misty, was only a few miles away and responded to the call for help. Baum noticed that Snedden was having trouble staying afloat and not wearing a life-vest, so he launched an inflatable boat from the shore and rowed out to Snedden. He made it to Snedden at the same time as the Misty arrived on scene.

Snedden was brought aboard the Misty and transported to within 100 yards of a boat launch site, where Baum took him the rest of the way to the shore in the inflatable to a waiting ambulance. Snedden was taken to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia, but is expected to make a full recovery.
