A New York grandmother outsmarted the scammers who tried to trick her out of thousands of dollars. The Long Island 73-year-old, who asked to be identified as Jean, says it all started when someone called her pretending to be her grandson. The man said he had been arrested for drunk driving and needed to be bailed out of jail.
Jean knew it wasn’t real because she doesn’t even have a grandson who drives. “I knew he was a real scammer,” she says. “I just knew he wasn't going to scam me.” Police explain that in a series of phone calls, unidentified males kept the story going. One claiming to be Jean’s grandson’s lawyer said he needed $8-thousand to get out of jail, another man claiming to be the bail bondsman wanted to collect the money.
But the wise granny told him she had the money at her house, thinking he wouldn’t fall for it, then she called the police and waited. When the man pretending to be the bail bondsman showed up at her house, she handed him an envelope filled with paper towels and when he turned to leave, police were waiting for him. Officers with the Nassau County Police Department arrested a suspect, charging him with attempted grand larceny in the third degree.
