Seattle firefighters rescue a couple’s dog six days after their home was destroyed in a landslide. A two-story home slid off it’s foundation and part-way down a hill in Seattle last week. Homeowner, Didi Fritts escaped unharmed and her husband, James Fritts, was later pulled from the home by emergency workers, but one of the couple’s dogs was found dead, and the other, Sammy, was missing and presumed to be dead.
Days later, James and his relative, Jason Lohr-Johnson, went to the destroyed home to gather some belongings when they thought they heard a whimper coming from underneath the rubble. “He said ‘I hear her’ and I was like ‘What?,’ and so I go down and he yelled her name and I could hear her whimpering too,” says Lohr-Johnson.
Firefighters returned to investigate and made a plan to get the dog out of the wreckage. They cut several holes in the structure and after an hour-long search they found Sammy and pulled her out. “My baby!” Didi yelled as Sammy was carried out of the home. Sammy’s tail was wagging and she appeared to be in good health. And for the first time in a week, the couple and their neighbors had a good reason to be happy. Sammy spent that night in the pet hospital and the next day was able to be reunited with her family.
