DDG: Drone Saves Man Having Heart Attack By Delivering Defibrillator

A 71-year-old Swedish man suffers a heart attack at home and emergency services send a drone carrying a defibrillator to save his life. Trollhättan retiree Sven was shoveling snow in his driveway when he suffered a heart attack and collapsed. At that moment, Dr Mustafa Ali just happened to be driving by Sven’s house. “I was on my way to work at the local hospital when I looked out the car window and saw a man collapsed in his driveway,” says Ali. The doctor rushed to help, starting CPR on Sven and telling Sven's wife to call for an ambulance.

Within a minute of receiving the call, emergency services dispatched an unmanned drone carrying an automated external defibrillator (AED). The drone was at Sven’s house in under four minutes and lowered the AED down to the ground. The drone is part of the Emergency Medical Aerial Delivery system (EMADE) produced by a company called Everdrones to provide assistance to patients within 10 minutes of experiencing cardiac arrest.

Minutes later, an ambulance arrived and took Sven to the hospital. “I can't put into words how thankful I am to this new technology and the speedy delivery of the defibrillator,” says Sven. “If it wasn't for the drone I probably wouldn't be here.” Sven has since made a full recovery and has now returned home.
