DDG: Man Raises Thousands To Buy Toys For Kids Affected By Tornadoes

A man in Kentucky is raising money to buy toys for children affected by the deadly tornadoes that devastated the midwest last week. When Shawn Triplett returned to his home of Mayfield, Kentucky, after the weekend’s destructive tornadoes, he was shocked at what he saw: the town was completely destroyed. A Marine veteran with three deployments under his belt, he knew he could help and immediately went to the volunteer center. He was sent out to guide a photo-journalist through the town and he got a better picture of the massive destruction.

That night, he visited the shelters where the displaced families were living and saw a mother consoling her son who was upset because Christmas was not going to happen. "It was very heartbreaking,” Triplett recalls. “It was way too much for me to handle." After a restless night, he decided something must be done to help the children to not lose Christmas. He contacted friends through social media and raised $2-thousand, which he used to buy toys and gifts from Walmart. Word spread of his good deed and by the next day, $6-thousand more had been donated.

Triplett has since started a GoFundMe and hopes to raise $20-thousand to buy toys and gifts for families affected by the tornadoes. And he notes that 100% of the money is going toward the gifts, he’s picking up the tab on any overhead needed to distribute them. “This isn’t just a toy drive. Most of these kids were already living in low income housing. Most have never had a full blown Christmas like most of us have had. I’m determined to make this not just a good Christmas, but the best damn one they’ve ever had,” he says in a follow-up on the GoFundMe page. “I thank you again for all of your support. It truly does mean the world to me.”
